Lupus Now Spring 2011 Cover Story - Family Ties

As a member of the design team on the popular series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Eduardo Xol helps improve the lives of a family in need every week for ABC TV. Off camera, Xol, the eldest of three siblings in a close-knit Mexican-American family, is helping his sister, Monica Cajayon, cope with lupus. He not only provides an understanding ear and a strong shoulder, but also has put his landscaping talents to work by designing a relaxing Zen garden retreat in her backyard.

“We’ve always been there for each other, not only as brother and sister, but as friends, with moral support and understanding,” says Xol, who, at 45, is five years older than Cajayon. “There have been moments when she has felt awful, and like nobody really understands. She calls me, and I just allow her to vent.” In turn, he says, “She’s let me lean on her shoulder if need be. We’ve been close our whole lives. I think it comes from our parents and relatives who taught us how important family bonds are, and the love and respect we were taught from a very young age that reinforced our relationship. Friends can come and go, but family is always there for you if you nurture that relationship.”

Fall issue of Lupus Now magazine has arrived!

The new issue of LN begins with the Lupus Living section, where we offer encouragement and support to everyone who plans to make a New Year resolution to stop smoking. We also share suggestions on how to avoid colds and the flu this winter, and why it’s important to talk to your doctor before you start taking any dietary or herbal supplements.

In the Wellness section, we have information about the benefits of three popular low-impact movement workouts—tai chi, Pilates, and yoga—and when and how to take your medications. Timing really can matter!

The cover feature is about learning to take control of life’s challenges rather than allowing those things to control you. It’s not always easy to do, but we believe you will see great improvements in your life when you embrace this philosophy.

Do you know how keep your health insurance, if you have to stop working, or how to get coverage, despite having lupus as a pre-existing condition? Our second feature offers an overview of three important safety nets you can really use.

Our third feature takes a look at the state of pediatric lupus research today, and why it is crucial to understand all the ways that lupus affects the lives of children and adolescents.
